Becoming a healthier me in my mid 30’s

I had a different title for this blog. It was the things that I have given up to become a healthier me. I was looking through some old Facebook pictures of myself and how different I look from when I was 25 to now. The first picture of me on a horse is probably when I weighed about 160 lbs. I think for my height that was a good weight. I know that people still seen me as over weight probably but back then I had a don’t give a crap attitude about what other’s thought of me. So I just went and looked up on this weight thing and it says for someone my height i should weight between 114-144 lbs. Well we will have to debate on that later. I  let myself really go after I got a desk job. In the 2nd picture you see with my little man I taken January 20, 2017; this is where i weighed my highest weight of 370 lbs. Prior to this picture I had been feeling kinda blew I guess is the right word to use. I was walking into school looking at myself through the glass reflection and staring back at me was someone I did not recognize anymore and someone I didn’t want to be anymore. That was my wake up call so to speak. I decided then and there I needed to make changes.

How did  I start you might ask? To make my lifestyle changes. First is back 2 years ago I got sick with a cold. That cold caused me to drink only water or tea. From that point on I didn’t drink anymore soda/pop. Flash forward to beginning of January 2017. I get some information in the mail about the 2017 Healthy Initiative that my tribe has put together for the citizens of the band along with family members and employees. That started on January 22, 2017. That following week is when I started going to Cardio drumming with my teacher that I had for class while attending SMC. That is where I would say that I lost my first 10 pounds. I did that two times a week for an hour. In February I decided that I wanted to invest in Fitbit, so that I could keep track of my steps. I didn’t realize how much was included with the Charge 2 when I got it. I use it to track my steps and work outs. Also, with the Healthy Lifestyle we were put into teams. I didn’t know anyone besides my Aunt Julie who was doing it so I knew that she would be on my team. Otherwise it was all up in there from then on. So I got my first email from our team leader back in February 24, 2017. I am going to copy and paste her first email cause this is what got me really started on what I do now.

These are Allie’s words

Welcome to Team Allie!

You have now taken the first step to becoming a healthier you by joining the Healthy Lifestyles Campaign. As individuals or a team we all want to succeed and see results. As your team lead, I’m here to provide tips, tricks, and support whenever it is needed. I would really like for us to come up with a new team name as soon as possible so if anyone has any ideas please let me know! I also want everyone to have some tools that I believe could help with your success; I strongly encourage everyone to download the “MyFitnessPal” app. This is a great way for all of us to stay in touch and encourage each other, it also helps with calculating your individual calorie goals. Anyone who does download it, please add me (took out her name) and share with anyone. I would also encourage everyone to schedule a DEXA  scan at Pokagon health services. It is a great way to bring attention to your problem areas, and also your overall health. Lastly! To stay qualified for the first quarter prizes please get re-measured at either wellness centers between March 6th-16th. I’m extremely excited to have you all be apart of my team for this campaign, I hope to see great results with everyone! Please don’t hesitate to contact me at anytime!

Good Luck!

These are the words that changed how I look at certain things. Like I log all my food I eat and the water I drink using the MyFitnessPal app. Which I do like a lot. I have been debating of upgrading to a more precise break down of things that I eat or drink. I did also schedule that Dexa scan.

You might be wondering what a Dexa scan is. Well, here are the technical aspects. A dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXAscan, also called a bone density scan, is a common technique used to measure bone density. This completely painless procedure is easily performed and exposes the patient to minimal radiation.

I didn’t get a full body one done as you had to be 300 pounds or under. So I got my arm done. which was still pretty cool to see that my bones are good, at that time I had 41% body fat on my arms alone. So I am working my goal of 300 pounds so that I can get my dexa scan done. Anyways, lets back up a little so that I can tell my weight loss stuff in order. Sorry for that….

So after receiving this information from Allie and using MyFitnessPal. It was time for 1st quarter weigh in. Which mind you I didn’t start mine until January 22. My official weight in was something like 368.4 something along those lines. So when I got my weigh in for March I was at 358.4 I had lost 10 pounds. Don’t know how many inches at this time. My name was also drawn for a 1st quarter prize which was an awesome aroma therapy diffuser.

At the March weigh ins. That is when I actually meet Allie in person. She was super nice and down to earth. A real person if you know what I mean. At that time I was still just doing Cardio drumming two times a week. I asked Allie about doing weight training. Cause I thought that it wouldn’t hurt and would probably be good for me. So then I added 2 days a week of weight training. So I was doing Cardio Drumming on Mondays and Wednesday and on Tuesdays and Thursdays weight training.

In the mean time I have cut out a lot of red meat, sweets and junk food. If I eat on the go it’s usually Jimmy John’s or Subway. I know bad right with all the carbs in bread. But I am not a carb counter unless I really have to be. I love bread and pasta. So instead of carb counting I do moderation, and portion size control. I mostly look at Saturated Fat and trans fat(sold like butter), Polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated(these are liquid fats example vegetable oil). I also watch my calorie intake per meal. I try to keep my calorie intake for the day around 1100 to 1500 a day. Some days I do get up to 2000, but not often anymore. (I always carry a Clif Bar or Larabar with me as sometimes I do feel drained after working out so much.) I usually work about 7 hours a day with Fridays off. Right know that works for my schedule.

So now that school is out I usually go to gym 6 days a week anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours at the gym. Mondays are probably the longest normally.

This is what my day normally looks like on a Monday during the Summer:

up at 5 AM for work. To work at 6 am – 1 pm or 1:30 PM. Depending on what I have going on.

7 am I start my 12 hour movement 250 steps an hour in the 12 hours. Sometimes I make them sometimes I don’t depending how busy I am. After I am done with work I usually head straight to the gym. Unless I have errands to run.

I usually get to the gym by 1:30 PM or 2 PM depending on when I have the pool for will depend on what I do first. I like to do my cardio and weights before I run or swim in the resistance pool which as a tread mill it’s awesome. Right know I do 20 to 30 minutes on the tread mill, 30 minute weight workout with Allie or DeJonay sometimes a little longer depending on how much Allie wants me sweating. Then I go to the pool either for 30 minutes or an hour. Then comes yoga for an hour and half. Best thing ever, I am still not as flexible as I want to be yet but I love going and working on the flexibility.  So on a Monday night I am heading home about 5:30 PM and then get home at 6 pm. Then in bed by 9 pm. As I do wake up early.

Tuesday through Friday are the same during the summer. As I get up early do my steps each hour, some form of cardio and weights, then home to take care of things there or veg with the family.

The other few pictures that you see…the one with the 3 side profiles are from April 15, May 16, and June 15. All taken where I workout at by Allie and these pictures compare my changes. We had 2nd quarter weigh ins in June and I dropped another 30 pounds. Which has not been easy a lot of hard work. So I got a phone call from the Health Center while I was working out on site at the Wellness Center. I was like why are they calling me when I am here. That is what was going through my mind. Then I got the reason why they were calling. I had won again for 2nd quarter drawing. I got a 500 gift certificate for a bike. So I got a bad ass Electra Townie purple bike.

Pretty bad ass right?? I love it! I don’t ride everyday like I would love to. One of the things that I want is a trailer hitch for my Mazda so that I can get a bike carrier so that I can ride out at the Tribal Grounds on my comfy bike. Purple is my favorite color if you didn’t know.

So that is it up to date on what I am doing to shred the weight to a healthier me for my children and my husband. I don’t want my kids to lose me the way I loss my mom at such a young age. (That story will be coming in the near future)

*I want people to know that I do not do this Healthier Initiative for the prizes. I do it for me so that I can be a healthier adult. It’s not a diet it is a life style change. I have decided not to eat the Pumpkin Spice Pudding pie, ice cream, or sweets. I have decided instead to concentrate on eating fruits for snacks and veggies. Even if I would not have won anything I would have been okay with that.  I am feeling better about myself, having good self-esteem instead of low, and just all around being better.

My pants are getting loser, I am able to buy smaller size shirts just one size but that is a big thing, I have gone from wearing 30/32 pants to wearing now 26/28 comfortably as far as jeans go.  Yoga pants which I love I am down from a 26/28 to 22/24. Which I can’t wait until I am in those size jeans. My rings are getting to big for my fingers.  Just all around positive changes for me.

Hope that you have enjoyed this read. Please feel free to leave a comment.
